Community or School Literacy Analysis/Reflection
Students must attend at least one community or school literacy event. This could be a family reading night, celebrity reader Day, library storytime, poetry slam event, etc.
Write a brief summary of the event. Share the purpose, type of event, target audience, location, how many people attended (estimate). What activity (s) happened? Who was the sponsor of the event, and who led it (teachers, librarian, bookstore...)? Reflect on the success of the event. Do you feel this event had a positive impact on literacy for those who participated? Was it well organized, well run? What might you do differently or add to enhance the event? Were there strengths/weaknesses to the event? Typewritten and submitted to livetext or moodle for non ed majors. 1-2 pages depending on the length and number of activities presented at the event. 25 points include attendance at the event and submitted reflection paper

Homework: Discussion Post -Read the article "Creating Passionate Readers through Independent Reading" and respond to the discussion question in moodle. Due Sunday Sept. 22nd by midnight.
Discussion question: In a digital, fast paced culture, how can we foster a love of reading in children and young adults? How can we ensure our students/society are successful not only learning to read but also about becoming as driven about reading as they are their other interests like sports, video games, you tube, hobbies? Please reference strategies from the brief as well as your personal opinions. Please cite any additional sources.

Multicultural assignment option 1: Multicultural Literature Paper or multimedia presentation (use textbook and any other related articles) Paper/media must include:
Introduction/define multicultural childrens literature What criteria might you use to select authentic and quality multicultural books for use in the classroom or library? Describe the four levels of multiculturalism in curriculum, include classroom examples at each level. Why is it important to provide a rich variety of text types and authors? Personal connection or reflection on the topic. Do you have recollections of reading a book that reflected your identity or inspired you or changed your perspective on the world around you? Have you changed your thinking around how literature will shape your future classroom or home library?
Multicultural assignment option 2: Banned Book Awareness Project
Develop an awareness campaign on MacMurray Campus for "Banned Book Month" (read in, social media bast, library event, guest speaker, host a movie...) Must be approved by Ms. Johnson and any other appropriate school entities prior to execution of project! The event should build awareness of the need for access to diverse text and authors. The event should build awareness and/or celebrate the First Amendment. There should be publicity materials (flyer, poster, social media post, etc) that express the purpose and the details of the event. Following the conclusion of the event, each student must write a personal reflection on the impact on others and self reflection.
Oct. 7th -Any multicultural presentations will be shared. -Bring all completed reading logs for midterm check in -Share out of any recommended books from your logs. Did you read a book you absolutely loved or made you think of a strong application for? -If time allows-diverse authors/illustrators No Mid Term Exam
Looking ahead-next assignment: AUTHOR/ILLUSTRATOR STUDY/PRESENTATION: Students will select an author or illustrator and develop an analysis of their collected work and share their findings in a multimedia presentation. This presentation will include the following requirements:
1. Biography: Share biographical information on this person’s life, particularly if/how it influenced their work.
2. Author/Illustrator’s Collective Work Analysis: Introduce the audience to their collection of work by sharing common themes, styles of writing or drawing, elements that are characteristic of this person’s work,...
3. Personal Reflection: Explain why you chose this person. Who is the target audience for this collection of work? What about their work appealed to you as a teacher/person? How might you use this collection in a classroom or for a specific community group? How do you think people will respond to the works? Does it appeal to a narrow or broad group? Will students need additional support to appreciate and get the full benefit?
4. Please try to have samples of the books/collections available during your presentation. You should also create a multimedia presentation to share the info with your classmates who will be required to take notes.

Elizabeth: Alternate assignment: Design a community literacy event. If you could plan a storytime, poetry slam, family reading night, celebrity readers day, etc. event, what would you plan? Detail in 1-2 pages the target audience, purpose/goal of event, what activities will happen, how will you market or invite people, and maybe even create a flyer for your fake event. How do you think your event will impact literacy for the target audience? If you prefer to make a powerpoint to share out your event with us, that would be fine as well. I'll leave that up to you.
